Oceanbotics has returned to the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week in a new special, Black Mako of the Abyss, helping locate these rare, dark-colored sharks with its SRV-8X remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV).
In the special, filmed off the coast of Catalina Island in Southern California, the SRV-8X was used to track, locate, and film Mako sharks in their natural habitat.
Ryan Gates, an ROV operator, piloted the vehicle down to 1,640 feet (500 meters) using only a handheld controller and a laptop. The SubNav OS software displayed the sharks circling the vehicle as the team monitored real-time action from a laptop-based control station.
The documentary provided an up-close look at how professional-grade ROVs are expanding the way the ocean is explored, as well as showcasing how straightforward and user-friendly the SRV-8X is, even in challenging conditions.
This project highlights Oceanbotics’ ongoing mission to build the easiest-to-operate and most maneuverable ROVs, designed to make underwater operations more efficient, safer, and more cost-effective. Combined with the intuitive SubNav OS software, Oceanbotics delivers a user experience that ensures ease of operation in the underwater ROV industry.
